Building the Stowford Train Station

A new environment, at last! This may be used for a rewrite of the introduction, but is planned to be used in the Games Club route so far; and probably others as more planning concludes.

Why a Train Station?

England is quite car-centric for transport, outside of London, but I wanted to get train-based infrastructure involved in the game for a couple reasons:

  1. The characters in the game are of an age where they are adults, but may not know how to drive. Creating transport that isn't reliant on overwriting and expositing these facets of the characters explicitly is neater, to me.
  2. Because the setting is remote, a train station gives me the chance to explore some different and interesting areas with characters that wouldn't otherwise be afforded.
  3. That same 'car-centric' reliance doesn't work too great in Stowford, as it's a fairly small place that is mainly an attraction for the college; college students, same as the characters we'd meet in game, may not yet be able to drive either.

How does it look?

Well, I'm happy to say I have a render I've just finished working on as I write this post, hopefully it gives a good impression of the building before the final steps to making it game-ready are taken.

Considerations

When designing the station, I had to figure out which additions to the location would make sense or be important in the context of the town, such as:

  • Because I'm avoiding overusing cars, I've made the train station accessible to cyclists.
  • A gentrified / renovated building makes more sense in the setting than building a brand new area to a small town to add it to a train line.
  • Because of the college, accessibility options are thankfully better than they may be elsewhere, in such a renovated building.
  • Due to the rural nature of Stowford, grassy areas (even contained) should be present; it also gives a good impression of the town to visitors, whom would filter through the station first.

Other than these, I feel as though my design choices will be fairly obvious.

Reminder: The fictional town of Stowford has no relation to the real-life English town of the same name, and is being designed and created by me, just in case people aren't sure.
